For those of you that watch or have watched "The Biggest Loser" on TV are obviously very familiar with Bob Harper; the personal trainer on the show. Unfortunately, Harper was in a gym working out in New York City in February and has a massive heart attack. Thankfully, there were physicians and healthcare personnel also in the gym that were able to use the AED on Harper to resuscitate him. Harper survived this "widow maker" heart attack because people were there, they were properly trained on the use of the AED, and they immediately rushed in to assist.
Harper survived. But as Harper acknowledged, only 6% of individuals with this condition actually do live after such an episode. With AED training incorporated into most of our classes at Help-A-Heart CPR, we are also an authorized Zoll AED distributor. The AED is simple to use and essentially operates on its own after two pads are attached. The responder will then stand back and wait on directions from the unit and after the pads are attached and will listen to such commands as " Analyzing heart rhythm, everyone stand clear" and "Begin CPR Now". For many, its a misconception that if you look physically fit then you are also in exemplary condition in regards to cardiovascular health. This is a fallacy. If you have a history of cardiovascular disease in your family; get an extensive physical with a complete cardiovascular assessment.
